The original property featured a small, underused patio area that failed to complement the character of the period home. The space felt enclosed and disconnected from the garden, offering little natural light and limited functionality for modern living.

The homeowners wanted a solution that would preserve the traditional architecture of the house while creating a brighter and more practical living environment.

The Architectural Journey: From Concept to Cotswold Heritage

The integration of a modern hardwood orangery into a traditional Cotswold stone residence requires a delicate balance of heritage aesthetics and 21st-century thermal performance. Our process for this bespoke extension focused on three critical pillars: structural synergy, material integrity, and environmental control.

Bespoke Design & Planning Sensitivity

The initial design phase prioritized the Cotswold vernacular.

Working with the homeowner, our designers selected a footprint that maximized views of the landscaped gardens without overwhelming the original proportions of the house.

We utilized 3D CAD modeling to ensure the roof lantern’s pitch harmonized with the existing gable lines. Given the regional aesthetic standards, the choice of a muted exterior finish was essential to ensure the structure felt like a natural evolution of the property rather than an add-on.

Technical Specification & Craftsmanship

The framework was precision-engineered from sustainably sourced, FSC-certified hardwoods. Unlike standard uPVC or aluminum alternatives, hardwood offers superior natural insulation and structural rigidity, allowing for the slim sightlines visible in this project.

Central to the comfort of this room is the Solar Control Glazing system. We utilized high-performance, argon-filled units with a dual-action coating. This technology reflects up to 78% of solar heat during the summer months while retaining internal warmth during the winter, achieving a U-value that exceeds standard building regulations. This ensures the orangery remains a functional living space 365 days a year, not just a seasonal sunroom.

Seamless Integration

The final installation involved meticulous “weather-tight” integration with the original stone masonry.

Lead flashing details were hand-dressed to match the historic character of the main dwelling.

The inclusion of automated roof vents, triggered by rain and temperature sensors, provides a passive ventilation strategy that maintains air quality without manual intervention a hallmark of the Farrow & Jones commitment to effortless luxury.
