Built for living , loved for a lifetime.

The client owns two adjacent buildings—a main house and an ancillary studio—and wants a seamless, weather-tight link that unites them both visually and functionally. They require:
• A passage that floods with daylight yet offers thermal comfort year-round
• Gothic-inspired detailing that respects the historic character of the home
• Full-height glazing to maximize garden views from the connecting corridor
Farrow & Jones designed a glazed link extension with a pitched glass roof and a dramatic gable end. This structure not only stitches together the two buildings but also transforms an under-utilised alleyway into a light-filled gallery. Subtle Gothic motifs—in the bonded bar tracery above the doors—add architectural flair without overwhelming the contemporary clean lines.
• Pointed-arch bonded bar above the French doors, echoing Gothic tracery in a slim, powder-coated steel profile
• Full-height glazed gable end at the link’s apex, creating a cathedral-like focal point and maximizing daylight
• Pitched glass roof with low-iron safety glass, ensuring uninterrupted sightlines to sky and treetops
• Flush-glazed side panels with concealed rain-water gutters, preserving the minimalist aesthetic
• Matching brick dwarf walls to tie the new build into the material palette of the original structures
• Factory-finished hardwood joinery, custom-painted in a heritage hue that complements both buildings
The once-narrow gap between house and studio is now an elegant, functional corridor. By linking the two buildings with a glazed gable end and Gothic-bonded bars, the client achieved:
• A light-filled transition space perfect for art display, informal meetings, or morning coffee
• Enhanced thermal performance through double-glazed units and high-performance seals
• A cohesive architectural narrative that celebrates craftsmanship and historical reference
• Increased property value by adding a bespoke, lifestyle-focused feature
