The Warwickshire Manor Orangery

From Dated Conservatory to Heritage Orangery

Seamless Integration & Modern Living

From a Leaking Structure to a High-Performance Social Hub The primary objective of this Warwickshire project was to rescue a traditional farmhouse from a failing, leaking oak timber conservatory. The homeowners required a solution that maintained the heritage aesthetic of their rural home while providing the year-round habitability that the previous structure lacked. We designed a ground-up Sapele hardwood orangery that functions as a permanent, high-performance extension. By dissolving the boundaries between the kitchen and the new dining area, we created a stunning open-plan flow that prioritizes light, warmth, and structural integrity.

Light, Craftsmanship, and Architectural Detail

Inside, the orangery is centred around a bright dining space where floor-to-ceiling glazing and a glazed roof lantern draw natural light deep into the room while framing wide garden views. Complementing the interior openness, the project also highlights bespoke craftsmanship through carefully detailed timber joinery, polished chrome hardware, and classic exterior pilasters demonstrating the precision and character that define a fully custom-built orangery rather than a standard modular structure.

Architectural Synergy

Matching the heavy masonry and intricate rooflines of the existing Victorian architecture.

Thermal Performance

Replacing thin glazing and polycarbonate with high-performance solar-control glass.

Lifestyle Integration

Creating a seamless flow between the internal living space and the manicured gardens.

Bespoke Design & Planning Sensitivity
The initial design phase prioritized a "correctional" architectural approach, specifically addressing the failures of the previous leaking oak conservatory. Working closely with the homeowners, we utilized 3D CAD modeling to ensure the new Sapele hardwood footprint perfectly harmonized with the existing farmhouse gables, maintaining the property's traditional proportions while significantly increasing the habitable area. Given the regional aesthetic standards, the choice of reclaimed masonry—salvaged from an on-site outbuilding—was essential. This ensured the new structural piers carried the same material DNA and patina as the original residence, allowing the extension to feel like a natural, permanent evolution rather than a modern addition.
Technical Specification & Craftsmanship
Central to the structural integrity and 365-day functionality of this orangery is the integration of Glulam (Glue-Laminated) beams. These were engineered to support the bespoke roof lantern, providing far superior dimensional stability compared to the original oak structure and eliminating the risk of movement-related leaks. The flat roof areas feature a high-performance Sarnafil single-ply membrane, backed by a 10-year guarantee, ensuring a maintenance-free, weather-tight envelope. This is paired with argon-filled, solar-control glazing that reflects up to 78% of heat gain in summer while maintaining a superior U-value in winter, exceeding standard building regulations and delivering a stable internal climate regardless of the Warwickshire weather.
Seamless Integration & Internal Flow
The final installation involved meticulous "weather-tight" integration at the critical junctions where the new wing meets the original farmhouse masonry. Traditional Code 5 lead flashing details were hand-dressed to match the historic character of the dwelling, providing a permanent seal against the elements. Internally, the removal of the rear wall and the installation of high-span RSJs created a stunning open-plan thoroughfare into the kitchen. The inclusion of automated roof vents, triggered by rain and temperature sensors, provides a passive ventilation strategy that maintains air quality effortlessly—a hallmark of the Farrow & Jones commitment to luxury engineering and security, with the entire structure meeting PAS24

Interior Living & Light

You want to show the “view from the table.” This highlights the floor-to-ceiling light, the roof lantern, and the panoramic views.

Detail & Craftsmanship

This proves the “Bespoke” claim. Show the polished chrome handles (hardware) and the exterior pilaster details. It emphasizes that you don’t use generic “kits

The Evening Glow

This is a high-emotion shot. It shows the orangery as a warm, inviting part of the home at night, proving it is a 365-day room, not just for summer.

A Masterpiece in Stone and Timber

The finished project has completely redefined the rear elevation of the property. The new orangery provides a light-filled sanctuary that remains cool in the summer and cozy during the Cheshire winters.

By using a central glass lantern roof, we maintained the “outdoor-in” feel of a conservatory but added the structural integrity and aesthetic value of a high-end extension. It isn’t just a room; it’s an investment in the home’s legacy.
