Our clients approached us with a clear but ambitious goal: to replace a failing, high-maintenance white wooden conservatory with a structure that was a true architectural asset to their stunning Victorian sandstone home.
The original structure was thermally inefficient and lacked the “visual weight” required to complement the grand scale of the main house. The new design needed to feel like a natural evolution of the property blending heritage aesthetics with 21st-century performance.
In Cheshire, where period properties are a point of pride, “off-the-shelf” solutions simply don’t work. We needed to navigate the challenges of working with aged sandstone while ensuring the new timber orangery offered year-round comfort.

Matching the heavy masonry and intricate rooflines of the existing Victorian architecture.

Replacing thin glazing and polycarbonate with high-performance solar-control glass.

Creating a seamless flow between the internal living space and the manicured gardens.
A true orangery is defined by its substantial feel. Unlike a conservatory, it features solid pillars and a deep perimeter roof (the fascia), which provides a more “room-like” feel internally.
We utilized premium-grade, moisture-resistant timber, finished in a soft cream palette to provide a sophisticated contrast against the red-toned sandstone. Every detail, from the multi-tiered fascias to the period-accurate drainage, was chosen to reflect the house’s history.
The finished project has completely redefined the rear elevation of the property. The new orangery provides a light-filled sanctuary that remains cool in the summer and cozy during the Cheshire winters.
By using a central glass lantern roof, we maintained the “outdoor-in” feel of a conservatory but added the structural integrity and aesthetic value of a high-end extension. It isn’t just a room; it’s an investment in the home’s legacy.
